John Barrowman comes out all guns blazing against Bishop Nazir-Ali's comments

Openly gay actor John Barrowman has hit back at the Bishop of Rochester’s comments that gays should “repent and be changed” in sunday’s Telegraph.

Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC’s hit series Torchwood, married his civil partner, the architect Scott Gill in December 2006.  Speaking to ITV’s Loose Women, he said

“…weren’t the actions of Jesus Christ supposed to be about compassion and love and understanding? And here you have a man who is supposed to be teaching that and he is teaching bigotry.” Read the rest of this entry »

Ireland Marriage Equality Cause Boosted by Mother’s Letter

Ireland's marriage equality cause is boosted by Helen Doody's letter

Ireland's marriage equality cause is boosted by Helen Doody's letter which criticises the current Civil Partnership Bill going through parliament

Mother’s Letter to Irish Justice Minister “Civil Partnership Bill is not good enough for my family”

Current Civil Partnership Bill is discriminatory to gay couples

Current Civil Partnership Bill is discriminatory to gay couples

A mother of a gay son has written to the Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern asking for Ireland’s controversial Civil Partnership Bill to be amended so “everyone in this country can be equal.”

Helen Doody was moved to write her passionate letter after her son Declan had initially written to Mr Ahern about Ireland’s lack of marriage equality and had been ignored.  The letter has proved a big hit in Ireland where 81% of the population think everyone should be treated equally, regardless of sexuality.

A mother’s letter has great significance for gay rights in Ireland.  It was a letter  from the mother of a gay son to Justice Minister Máire Geoghegan-Quinn that was deeply influential in decriminilising homosexuality in Ireland 15 years ago.

Ireland’s current Civil Partnership Bill is highly unsatisfactory to many gay people in Ireland, as it falls far short of giving true marriage equality to gay people. Read the rest of this entry »

Scroll down to email the Bishop yourself and help persuade him to answer our three questions.

So the Bishop of Rochester thinks that gay people should “…repent, and be changed“, right?

Well kind of.  Suddenly yesterday after all the hoo-ha in the press about his interview in the Sunday Telegraph Bishop Nazir-Ali has issued a statement, in which he appears to water down the comments he made.

Hmmm - well, they don’t seem to be diluted that much!  Here’s what he says now:

“On being pressed as to whether this included homosexuals, I said something to the effect that yes, we all need to repent when we fall short of God’s will and be transformed.”

Nothing’s changed – he’s just dressed up his homophobic comments in fancier words.

So, we asked the Bishop of Rochester three questions to try to get to the bottom of what, exactly, he proposes for gay people: Read the rest of this entry »

Is She Our Queen Too?

Did the Queen Support Anti-Gay Church Group or Didn’t She?

The Queen wrote letters of support to anti-gay Christian group

The Queen's private secretary wrote letters of support to anti-gay Christian group

The Queen has written twice to the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans offering her support and wishing them success, according to the Daily Telegraph today.

The Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (FCA) is a fundamentalist Christian group which has it in for gay priests and gay human rights big time!

The human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said:

“Many leading members of FCA believe the civil and criminal law should discriminate against gay people. They do not believe that we are entitled to equal rights.

That is why they opposed the gay law reforms of the last decade, including an equal age of consent, civil partnerships, protection against discrimination, the repeal of Section 28, fostering and adoption by same-sex couples, and access to fertility treatment for lesbian partners.”

It is unbelievable that our Queen, the head of the Church, should take sides so strongly in such a matter. Read the rest of this entry »
