MarriagEquality - the Irish organisation which campaigns for equality in gay marriage - has launched a video called ‘Sinead’s Hand’.  The pro marriage-equality video has become a worldwide hit on YouTube with over 54000 views.

In the video the actor Hugh O’Connor traipses all over Ireland in a smart suit asking people for ‘Sinead’s hand in marriage’.  I won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil the punchline!

Enjoy the video - I did:

Ireland faces a particularly difficult struggle to bring full equality to gay marriages, despite the majority of the population being in support of same sex marriage.  It seems there is political resistance, and the strong catholic religeous identity of the country also complicates matters.

Later this month the Irish parliament will debate proposed legislation to allow civil partnerships, however MarriagEquality are not satisfied that the proposed solution would offer true equality to LGBT people in Ireland

It looks like true equality may still be some way off for Ireland’s lesbian and gay population, but then we can’t speak - the UK’s proposed Equality Bill has specific LGBT exclusions - the Bill wouldn’t cover us under its harrassment section, for instance.

Is this 2009?  As I write this I almost can’t believe I’m writing it.  When are the UK and Ireland’s LGBT population going to get full equality?

Anyway, moan over (for now!).
