Scally Lads - the Gay Phenomenon
Featuring Mothership Gay Dating members - photos shown with permission - thanks guys
Scally lads, with their Nike Air Max trackies, Reeboks and baseball cap on backwards, represent the acceptable face of dressing down in modern gay Britain.
Scally lads seem to be everywhere in the modern UK gay culture, but have you ever wondered where they came from and why the scally look has become such an erotic and desirable image?
In fact the word scally (or ’scallie’) is abbreviated from scallywag which has Irish origins. Stemming originally from the 1970s the irony is that a scally was actually a highly fashionable look that began in Liverpool - a town with strong Irish roots.

However in the 80s and 90s the scally became more a way of life than a fashion statement. In fact ‘real’ scally lads from that time, and even now, would never describe themselves as scally - their look, their dress sense, was simply how they were brought up and defines their culture and roots which they are proud of.

It is only in the 21st century that the scally lads look, and with it the closely associated (but entirely different) chav lifestyle, has been adopted with such enthusiasm throughout Britain, and moving entirely away from its Liverpool roots. In fact, in a recent poll nearly 8000 people voted Croydon the chaviest town in the UK.
In gay culture the rise of gay dating and gay chat websites like Fitlads and to a lesser extent Ladslads have cemented the appeal of the scally lads image. There are even themed gay club nights devoted to the look, such as Scallyladz at Central Station in London.

The scally look is very suggestive
There is no doubt that the boy-next-door with the shiny trackies and six pack, talking with hard attitude, has a broad appeal to gay men. Not only that, but the clothing worn by scally lads tends to be sports gear, and that fits in very well with hot gay guys who tend to spend time keeping fit. In short, it’s hot, it’s easy and looks horny.
So, whilst in straight culture the chav sub culture has become highly derogatory, the scally lads look retains strong appeal to the UK gay community. However, this gay popularity has endured for several years now, and it remains to be seen for how much longer gay guys will continue their love affair with the scally lads sub culture, and the bold fashion statement it makes.
