Cosy Downing Street Reception Has Pink News Firmly Wedged Between Gordon Brown’s Buttocks

Pink News publisher Benjamin Cohen at Downing Street 'reception' before Pride London
At 2.55pm today London’s top surgeons were rushed to Number 10 to separate the puckered lips of Pink News which had become fused to Gordon Brown’s anus.
It seems Gordon Brown’s recent charm offensive on the gay press has worked a treat with Pink News. Their article about Patricia Hewitt criticising the Prime Minister’s interest in gay rights had them leaping to his defence after only one paragraph. How dare she!
‘Brown has embraced the gay community’ they bleated from deep between the Prime Minister’s gratefully quivering butt-cheeks, referring to their “intimate reception“ at 10 Downing Street on the morning of Pride London. Hmm - does ‘embracing’ the gay community include blasting a massive gay hole in the so-called ‘Equality Bill’ to create ’sexual orientation’ exemptions? Some embrace!
So the select Downing Street gathering on the morning of Pride London was a ‘reception’ after all then. Strange, because when the Mothership Blog spoke to Downing Street two weeks ago they were adamant the snug get-together was a businesslike ‘meeting’ for the Pride organisers and the gay press, and most definitely NOT a back-slapping reception.
We were asking why Peter Tatchell (who was jointly responsible for the very first UK pride in 1972) was not invited. Tatchell claims he was ditched from the invite list on the personal orders of Gordon Brown after he upset the PM by speaking his mind, something it appears Pink News are unlikely to do!
Pink News’ publisher, Benjamin Cohen, attended the Downing Street reception.
“The prime minister told me there was still much to do for gay rights, despite everything Labour has achieved,” gushed Cohen,
“We also talked about religion and about my own experiences of being at a Jewish faith school. He said it was difficult to reconcile religious problems and sexuality.”
Looks like our well-briefed Prime Minister knew exactly which buttons to press! You’d never think there was a general election around the corner, would you?

In reply to the last post by Edward Peters, I would have thought that gay people who have been given so much by New Labour would at least show some gratitude and loyalty. There is no reason at all to think that the Tories will now be suddenly “more tolerant” towards us, and why should we put aside and conveniently forget all those years when the Conservative Party was in your own words, “against homosexuality”? There may be many other issues that one could take exception to with this government, but if as gay people we are to continue to make progress, it is essential to remain faithful to the only real light and power we have been granted, and that against the most formidable odds.

I agree with the writer’s observations and disagree with the above comment made by John Hartley. I feel that the writer has the right to be cynical as if the above poster had bothered to research where the cynicism came from he would have known that the proposed so called ‘equality bill’ indeed does make exemptions in ‘equality’ when it comes to sexual orientation. This is NOT equality. It should not be called the ‘equality bill’. The Tories of old definitely stood against homosexuality, but I feel that if the blues do indeed win the next election, we will see a more tolerant and modern conservative party. Even if not, surely noone can do as much damage to our country’s standing, esteem, culture, privacy and well being than Labour have inflicted on us…..also, having an unelected Prime Minister just is not good enough….Labour should have called an election as soon as TB stood down.

This is an overly cynical report revealing the writer’s low opinion of Gordon Brown more than anything else.
Over the years New Labour has been in power, the goverment has kept its promises to the gay community. We have seen advances in gay rights, culminating in civil partnerships, which the Tories consistently opposed when in office.
There is no doubt in my mind that Gordon Brown is as true a friend and supporter of gay people as any Prime Minister is likely to be. David Cameron and the Tories have woken up belatedly to the fact that they need the pink vote to get elected, and have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century on these issues. The Pink Paper is right, and more fool us if we vote blue at the next election.
