John Barrowman comes out all guns blazing against Bishop Nazir-Ali's comments

Openly gay actor John Barrowman has hit back at the Bishop of Rochester’s comments that gays should “repent and be changed” in sunday’s Telegraph.

Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC’s hit series Torchwood, married his civil partner, the architect Scott Gill in December 2006.  Speaking to ITV’s Loose Women, he said

“…weren’t the actions of Jesus Christ supposed to be about compassion and love and understanding? And here you have a man who is supposed to be teaching that and he is teaching bigotry.”

and went on to tell the Bishop to “stop talking rubbish”.  Barrowman, himself brought up by a churchgoer, even asked his elderly mother who was sitting in the audience if he should repent!  “No” came the firm reply!  Barrowman went on to say

I think more gay men would go to church if the teachers weren’t as bigoted as they are.”

Bishop Nazir-Ali has offended many people by his comments, published the day after the busiest ever Pride London.  The Mothership Blog is still waiting for him to answer three questions we have put to him in order to clarify his remarks.
