Glastonbury 2009 - a Mothership Gay Dating Member’s Diary

Mothership Gay Dating member longhairedrocker reports on this year’s Glastonbury from a gay man’s perspective.

I’ve been home 3 days now since the Glastonbury Festival and I’m only just about recovered!

The journey to Glastonbury is on Wednesday. You have to go quite early to get a good camping spot and for us it was by train. Unfortunately, on arriving at the local station we had to wait 4 long hours in the sun for the shuttle bus. On the plus side we did talk to some fit lads in the queue, though of course never saw them again for the whole weekend. On Wednesday night there is the option to spend the night raving with everyone off their heads at the stone circle, but it was raining…so it was drinks by the campfire and then bed.

Thursday

Thursday is a day to explore Glasto before the main bands start on Friday. Time for a good look around the Green fields and all the hippy stuff. And there is lots of stuff to try - they even have solar saunas! Not like gay saunas though…It’s also a good day for internet forum meet-ups- so there was a big Twitter meet and an efestivals gay meet. Thursday also saw East 17 playing. The place was packed and there were a LOT of hot men there. We had our rainbow flag with us, the only one we’d seen- so far…

Friday

Friday- the start of the bands. Plus more rain. More rainbow flags had started to appear too, and we noticed some gay couples. Come Friday evening we all headed down to Trash City, which is an apocalyptic scene with huge metal sculptures and jet flames bursting into the air. It is also the location of NYC Downlow, the 1970s-style gay club where you have to wear a fake tache to get in. Once inside all the gays have come out of the woodwork as the place is packed. Who’d have guessed so many gay guys could cope with the mud?!

Saturday

Saturday. Sunshine! Instantly the place is awash with hot topless guys, and you just have to join them! Also Rolf Harris day. Amazing show. Swears much more in real life than he does on TV! By the early evening I was boiling and so went for a shower. Yes! They have showers! Solar powered and very refreshing indeed. Also another chance to perv at hot lads- but enough of that…

Sunday

Sunday. The final day- the day to finish up all the booze (and other substances) and really go crazy! Blur were the headliners today and it was really quite touching to see Damon Albarn crying on stage. The day was ended off with another night in the NYC Downlow gay club. Whilst inside the most almighty downpour occurred outside, killing the generator for the lighting (but not the sound) and causing a stream of water to come flooding across the dancefloor which seemed to start listing like a sinking ship! But everyone kept dancing in the dark, and after about half an hour they got the lights back on. Ended by chilling at the stone circle til 9am!

Monday. Home time. Sadly pack up the tent and trudge off site. Get sunburnt. Wish Glastonbury lasted longer!

Its an amazing festival, and it is the kind of place where it really doesn’t matter about race, religion, sexuality or any of that. Next year, you should come to Glastonbury too!
