A Gay Football Supporter
Mothership member ‘mumma’ talks about being a gay football supporter and his passion for Arsenal.

Mothership member 'mumma' is a gay football supporter with a passion for Arsenal
Well my team is Arsenal. I went to my first Arsenal match in 1984 (I was 9) and Arsenal were playing Everton FC and we won 1-0. Charlie Nicholas scored a penalty right near the end and I went home very happy.
I can recall weeks before missing Arsenal v West Bromich Albion - I was playing outside and went in for a drink and casually asked where my brother and dad were. My mum said they had gone Arsenal and I críed and went mad I called mum all the names under the sun and remember slapping her leg! So you see I loved football from an early age.
After that I used to go week-in week-out and never missed home games (then at Highbury). When my older brother got his first job he proceeded to take me all over England watching ‘The Arsenal’. In 1985 English clubs were banned from competing in European competitions (Heysel tragedy) but they were allowed back in around 1991 and I then followed ‘The Arsenal’ all over Europe.
I remember travelling to Paris in 1995 to watch the European cup winners cup final. I went with my brother and a friend. My brother and said friend had tickets and the plan was we buy me one in Paris. The demand for tickets was high and a few hours before the game we ventured towards the ground to see if we could find touts. All of a sudden the police put barriers up around the ground and lots of football supporters were closed in.
I assumed they were going to only then let people with tickets inside that space, but I was wrong. Instead they demanded to see people in that section’s tickets and each one who showed a ticket was allowed out. All the rest without tickets, including moi, were put on a coach and taken 20 miles outside Paris and put in cells. They let us out at HT and we rushed back towards the ground to try to watch on TV. The game went to extra time and Arsenal lost with the last kick, a 45 yard goal. I’m nearly crying now!
Football is my passion. Sometimes though I get frustrated with being gay and loving football. I’m gay, football is my life – get over it. I hate it when other gay guys assume you just wanna look at the players legs. I never have, never will. To Arsene Wenger – you’re my 1st, my last and my everything – I HEART you!
Football is my only real hobby. I used to play lots, but I’m too old now. I have had many sleepless nights worrying over my team. I just love em.
